Exchange 2007: Rapidly Growing Transaction Logs.  Causes?
Hello. Last weekend I awoke to find my Exchange 2007 server dismounted. After closer inspection it was found that for about 12 hours, the server generated 50gb of logs (about 20-40 a minute) that filled up the remainder of our hard drive space. We have about 70 mailboxes total on the system. During the time when the logs were being produced at this alarming rate, the database file grew as well. For about 3 days this went on and the database grew about 8gb total. On Monday I ran some tests to see which mailbox was taking up all the resources, as our server was very slow for everyone. It turns one it was 1 user the entire time. Interestingly, he has an IPhone OS4, that he purchased when it first came out. When I had him turn off his phone, the logs stopped to a normal 1-2 a minute. He turns his phone back on and its back to 20-40 a minute. My eventual fix was to disconnect his phone from the server and have it resync, which solved the problem. When I checked the user monitor, the iphone for this user is sending a ton of packets back and forth, even now when the logs are under control. What is causing this much traffic? However, a few days later he was complaining his contacts were messed up, with duplicates. When I took a look, his contacts were duplicated hundreds of times, if not more. This user had about 9,000 contacts, with more than half duplicated so many times, he had about 125,000 contacts now. So we think something was going on with his iphone and contacts to generate the logs. Has anyone seen this before? Do you think its an Iphone issue with contacts or syncing up with his itunes? Or even an app on his phone? Apple hasn't responded back to me in days, so I assume they have no clue. I am just afraid this will happen again. We have 5 users using Iphones, 3 with OS4, and the other 2 are older models. The other users have had no problems. Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Thanks. I'll try that update that was recently released. Seems to exactly be what I was experiencing on the server.

In addition, consider imposing mailbox quotas to protect your service from this type of unplanned outage. Alexei

mbergonzoni, I have the same issue with an Iphone user on OS4. Did your problem get resolved with the profile update or version 4.01 update? We tried the profile update for this user and then reenabled activesync but it looks like the db and logs are growing fast again. Thanks, Cliff
